An apartment building at East Tennessee State University was evacuated Saturday night after a number of law enforcement officers were called in to check for explosive materials.
An email from David Collins, Vice President of Finance and Administration, was sent to all faculty, staff and students about the incident Sunday morning. Public safety officers were investigating two apartments at Buc Ridge where drugs, drug paraphernalia and other unusual items were discoverd, according to the email.
Among the items found were marijuana, clear crystal pellets, propane canisters, assorted powders, vermiculite, an unknown liquid, and a non-active pressure cooker. The items were discovered in two apartments and a student vehicle,according to the email.
The Johnson City Police Department, the Johnson City Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit, the state fire marshal, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Fire Arms (ATF), the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Unicoi County Sherriff’s Department which provided canine units, were called in to assist.
"No firearms or explosive devices were located, and it was the conclusion of the responding agencies that these items were not being used for manufacturing any type of explosive device," the email state. "All powders and the liquid are being sent to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation for analysis. The incident remains under investigation."
Four students were arrested on various marijuana related charges. A campus disciplinary review of these four students charged with the crimes has begun. These students will not be allowed to be on campus during this disciplinary review, according to the email.comments powered by Disqus
