JEFFERSON CITY — Athletes from Dobyns-Bennett and Science Hill will become teammates to help build the foundation of the Carson-Newman swimming program.
D-B's Tommy Bourgeois II and Science Hill's D.J. Smith were among 21 new signees — 13 men and eight women — announced by coach Paige McCord this week, joining nine swimmers who signed in December as part of the Eagles' inaugural class.
"We continue to make history and build on the foundation set by the nine fall signees," McCord said in a release from the university. "I'm proud to welcome all 21 of these swimmers into the fold for C-N swimming."
Bourgeois was the Indians' MVP three years running and a three-time all-region selection. He helped D-B to a district championship his sophomore year while also playing football and baseball. He is the son of Tommy and Melanie Bourgeois.
"An athlete with an unyielding drive, Bourgeois is a gifted butterfly specialist and will provide needed depth in our freestyle events," McCord said. "Look for him to develop significantly over the next four years."
A three-year swimmer at Science Hill, Smith was a team captain in 2012 and a two-time state meet qualifier. He was twice named all-conference and was all-state honorable mention in 2013. He is the son of Kristin Merrifield and Dennis L. Smith.
"He is tall athlete who has a great freestyle form, abundant positive attitude and mounting abilities," McCord said.comments powered by Disqus
