Suspect shot by elderly Hawkins woman during alleged home invasion indicted

MOLENA NICOLE DOWELL

ROGERSVILLE — The Morristown woman who was reportedly grazed by a bullet fired by an 86-year-old Bulls Gap woman during a Feb. 1 alleged home invasion was named Monday in a two-count Hawkins County grand jury indictment.

Molena Nicole Dowell, 39, 1544 Fish Hatchery Road, Morristown, is scheduled for arraignment Friday in Hawkins County Criminal court on charges including aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary.

Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office detectives identified Dowell after she allegedly pawned several items reported stolen from the Bulls Gap home of Louise B. Hoard on Feb. 1.

Upon arresting Dowell Feb. 6, deputies allegedly recovered other items stolen from Howard’s residence in Dowell’s vehicle.

After arresting Dowell, detectives also discovered she had a bullet graze on her right arm.

The only known connection between Dowell and Howard was that Dowell had previously lived near Howard for several years.

On the afternoon of Feb. 1, Howard called the HCSO to report a suspicious vehicle.

Howard was speaking on the phone to Deputy Kenny Lunsford Jr. when she stated she heard a noise and laid the phone down. Lunsford then reportedly heard her screaming.

When deputies arrived at Howard’s residence, they found her front door had been forced open and a large metal wrench was on the bathroom floor.

Howard told deputies she met the female intruder in her bedroom. The intruder reportedly told Howard she wasn’t going to hurt her and wanted her money and began to pull her through the hallway toward the kitchen.

“Mrs. Howard pulled a pistol and tried to shoot the female attacker,” Lawson said. “When the attacker tried to take the pistol from her, the weapon discharged.”

The burglar then fled with the pistol and Howard’s purse, which contained a bank card, checkbook and rings.

All stolen property except for one ring and the gun were recovered from Dowell’s vehicle.

Dowell is currently free on $10,000 bond.
