LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Mid-South Conference honored a pair of Virginia-Wise golfers for their academic excellence at the league’s annual banquet.
Chelsea Cluesman and John Hall made their respective all-academic teams. Cluesman, a senior, is a former Lee High star. Hall, out of J.I. Burton, is a freshman athletically but a sophomore academically.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.25 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and be at least a sophomore in good standing with his or her academic institution.
On Monday, the Mid-South named the Highland Cavaliers’ Charity Lawson its softball player of the week. The junior from Duffield had a terrific week at the plate, batting .474 (9-for-19) with three home runs — two of them grand slams — and 15 RBIs.
Junior Rachel Hawks, Lawson’s teammate, was named the league’s pitcher of the week. The Suffolk, Va., native went 4-0 — all complete-game efforts — and recorded a save.
The Highland Cavs (30-19) begin Mid-South softball tournament play Saturday at 10 a.m. against Shawnee State at Domtar Park in Kingsport.
