HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — Freshman Kevin Phillips homered and drove in five runs Sunday to help East Tennessee State leave the Bluegrass State with a 13-4 win and a series sweep of Northern Kentucky in the first Atlantic Sun Conference baseball meeting between the schools.
Phillips staked the Buccaneers (18-11, 7-5) to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning when his first collegiate home run sailed over the 12-foot fence in left field. He doubled to clear the bases in the fourth, part of a six-run rally that gave the Bucs an 8-0 lead.
Derek Niesman finished 3-for-4, Andrew Green was 2-for-2 with two walks and two RBIs, and Dylan Tritsch had two hits and knocked in a pair of runs.
Logan Rice (3-1) followed up his first start earlier in the week with six strong innings for the win. The former Unicoi County star hasn’t allowed a run in 12 straight innings.
Josh Myers was 2-for-4 with a homer and Cody Kuzniczci knocked in two runs for the Norse (7-5, 1-8).
The Bucs will try to extend their four-game winning streak Tuesday when they host rival Tennessee at 7 p.m. at Thomas Stadium.
