Shell comes up big at Kingsport Speedway

KINGSPORT — Zeke Shell has been among the fastest drivers at Kingsport Speedway all season.

But on Friday night, he was Shell on wheels.

Shell took the lead from Chad Finchum on lap 45 and held on the rest of the way to claim his first NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model victory of the season.

“Wow, I was kind of beginning to wonder if we were ever going to be able to win us a race,” Shell said. “We’ve had a strong car in every race this year and the opportunities have been there to win, but we just hadn’t been able to seal the deal and bring home the trophy.”

Shell finally caught a break late in the race when Finchum had to get off the gas to avoid a pair of lapped cars. That allowed Shell to catch Finchum, nudge him and move into the lead.

Once out front, Shell made sure he didn’t miss a chance to win the 60-lap feature.

“I really felt we had a much faster car, but you have to give him credit for doing what he had to do and keep me pinned behind him,” Shell said of Finchum. “But with those lapped cars kind of getting into the picture, I saw that as my chance to make a move.

“And the final results proved we were faster, as I put several car lengths between myself and Chad there at the finish.”

Blake Jones turned in a solid third-place run, and Lee Tissot and Paul Nogradi Jr. rounded out the top five. Polesitter Hayden Woods finished 10th.

In other action, Nick Cole also executed a late pass to win the 30-lap Street Stock feature.

Cole got past leader Chris Tunnell on lap 27 to pick up third win of the season. Rob Austin finished second, and Jared Broadbent, Tunnell and Tony Vance completed the top five.

Jason Ketron also captured his third victory of the season in the 25-lap Pure 4 race. Ketron was followed to the finish line by Kenny Absher, John Ketron, Billy Ketron and Derek Penley.

The Legends division ran a doubleheader, a pair of 10-lap races. Zack Walton won the first one and Jacob Owens captured the second.

Billy Taylor won the Rookie Pure 4 race.
