WEBER CITY -- A single-vehicle accident involving a propane truck has prompted the closure of East Carters Valley Road in Scott County, Va.

Scott County Central Dispatch said the incident was called in at the intersection of East Carter's Valley Road and Newland Hollow Road just before noon Wednesday when a Ferrell Gas home delivery truck overturned in a field.

The Virginia Department of Transportation was forced to close several miles of East Carter's Valley Road to through traffic due to the accident. The road remained closed as of 5 p.m.

"It happened right beside a small, two-lane road here and we have all the emergency vehicles staged in the road," Scott County Emergency Management Director Jeff Brickey said. "So, we had to close this section of the road off."

No timeframe was given for when the road might be reopened.

Brickey said the truck's driver, who has not been identified, was transported to Holston Valley Medical Center for treatment. A spokesman for Ferrell Gas confirmed the driver is being treated for head injuries.

The Weber City and Gate City volunteer fire departments responded to the accident, along with the Virginia State Police and a Virginia Emergency Services HazMat crew.

Brickey said the truck was full of propane when it left the roadway and landed on its side in a field off East Carter's Valley Road.

"There were no big leaks from the truck. It had a few small leaks on the back, and the frame was bent on the truck," Brickey said "It is loaded...so, instead of uprighting this one, because the frame is damaged so bad and the tank is under stress, they're going to transfer the propane and then try to recover the truck."

An empty Ferrell Gas propane truck was brought to the scene shortly after 4 p.m. to transfer the propane. Brickey said the second truck was able to remove roughly 50 to 60 percent of the propane from the wrecked vehicle.

Although the wreck occurred near several homes, Brickey said no evacuations were ordered.

Brickey said the truck's driver was likely on his way to a Ferrell Gas station located at 13354 East Carters Valley Road when he wrecked.

"We think he may have been coming down here to offload, they have a station within site of where he wrecked, so he may have been headed to that location," Brickey said.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by the VSP. Calls seeking more information on the incident were not immediately returned. Attempts to contact VDOT for information on when East Carter's Valley would be reopened were also unsuccessful.
