CLINCHPORT — It’s not uncommon for a coach to call upon senior leadership to try to promote a spark. When the Rye Cove softball team calls on leadership from its seniors, the Lady Eagles have a short list to choose from.
In fact it is no list at all; the team has only one senior, Brooke Jones.
Jones took her leadership role to heart Tuesday in a 16-0 Cumberland District win over Thomas Walker. The game was shortened to five innings.
Jones pitched four hitless innings and belted out two home runs in securing the team’s first victory of the season. She struck out six and walked two.
Jones also had a team-leading seven RBIs. After her second home run in the third inning cleared right field, Rye Cove (1-4) held a 15-0 lead.
Haley Hillman was 3-for-3 with four RBIs and Kristen Sanders went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Lady Eagles.
Thomas Walker only had one runner make it past first base, and that came on a wild pitch in the fifth inning.
