Sports notes from around the region as of April 1:
• Virginia-Wise’s Mackenzie Cluesman shot an opening-round 81 in blustery conditions Monday, April 1 to sit tied for third in the third annual SEKI-Mid-South Conference Women’s Spring Invitational golf tournament at Crooked Creek Golf Community in London, Ky. Playing as an individual, Cluesman was just one shot out of the lead held by Shannon Bishop and Bri Tokariwski of the University of the Cumberlands. The event concludes Tuesday.
• The Sullivan South Rebel Band will host a fundraising golf tournament at Warriors Path State Park on May 4. The entry fee is $240 and the deadline to enter is April 22. Lunch is included. For more information, call (423) 557-6701 or 863-2888.
• The Tennessee Crusaders will kick off their inaugural season on Saturday, April 6. The Crusaders take on the Western Carolina War Eagles at 5 p.m. at the Sullivan Middle School football facilities. The Crusaders are a non-profit organization providing area athletes the opportunity to continue playing. (Information from Tennessee Crusaders President Greg Campbell.)
• Virginia-Wise senior forward Chelsea Cluesman received honorable mention on the NAIA women’s basketball All-America team on March 26. Cluesman finished her final season averaging 17.2 points per game and 8.6 rebounds. The former Lee High star, who is also a member of the Highland Cavaliers’ golf team, recorded nine double-doubles this past season. Cluesman’s final career tallies were 1,410 points and 800 rebounds.
