JOHNSON CITY — Former Dobyns-Bennett star Peyton Taylor took a no-hitter into the fifth inning in his first career start for the East Tennessee State baseball team Monday, but Radford first baseman Alexander Lee spoiled it with a triple and the Highlanders went on to beat the Buccaneers 4-2 at Thomas Stadium.
Taylor (0-1) retired 13 of the first 14 batters he faced. The freshman right-hander gave up three runs on four hits in seven innings of work.
Highlanders freshman left-hander Mitchell MacKeith got a no-decision after issuing two runs on six hits in 5 2-3 innings. Oliver Powers (1-0) earned the win by registering one out in the sixth, and Michael Costello notched the save.
Chris Riopedre went 2-for-4 with two doubles, Jeremy Taylor was 2-for-5 with a double and a stolen base, and Derek Niesman and Alex Reynolds knocked in runs for ETSU (14-11).
Jordan Taylor plated a pair in the seventh to provide the winning run for Radford (15-11).
The Bucs host Tennessee Tech tonight at 7.
