Former Vol Wilson asking for diversion in testing fraud case

March 29th, 2013 2:44 pm by Associated Press

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Former University of Tennessee and NFL wide receiver Cedrick Wilson is requesting court-approved diversion on federal charges that he paid someone else to take teacher certification tests on his behalf.

Wilson appeared before U.S. District Judge John Fowlkes in Memphis on Friday. The former San Francisco 49ers and Pittsburgh Steelers receiver was indicted in October on charges of wire and Social Security fraud, and conspiracy.

Wilson allegedly paid someone else to take two physical education examinations for him. Prosecutors say Wilson cited the tests in applications to work at Memphis City Schools in January 2010.

If diversion is approved and completed, the charges will be dismissed and removed from his record.

Prosecutors allege Wilson was part of a testing fraud ring that involved teachers in Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee.
