D-B pitchers freeze out Crockett hitters for Big 8 win

KINGSPORT — It was colder than a well digger’s britches  at J. Fred Johnson Stadium Wednesday.

Call that warm enough for the Indians to finally squeeze in another conference win.

Dobyns-Bennett’s Kyle Reeves and Logan Gentry combined for 13 strikeouts as the Indians froze out the Pioneers 10-0 in a six-inning Big 8 conference rout.

Crockett coach Scott Hagy admitted it  was probably better for the Pioneers to struggle in the cold than spend another day confined indoors.

“We had to play. There was nothing we could do about it,” said Hagy, whose team fell to 2-5 overall, 0-4 in the conference after scratching out only four hits.
“If we hadn’t played this game we wouldn’t have gone to a practice outside. So it’s positive, I guess,” he said.

The artificial turf at J. Fred was unquestionably a plus for the Tribe (6-1, 4-1), which  got in approximately 50 pitches apiece from  its two primary conference pitchers.

Reeves (2-0) struck out seven Crockett batters over three innings, walking none. He allowed two hits.

Gentry struck out six over his three frames of relief, also walking none and giving up a pair of hits.
