KINGSPORT — Area residents who want to meet a Super Bowl athlete — and do a good deed — will have their chance this week.
Dobyns-Bennett alumnus Daniel Kilgore, an offensive lineman for the San Francisco 49ers, will visit Marsh Regional Blood Center from 3 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 21 to sign autographs and meet with the center’s blood donors.
“Even though Daniel’s moved away, he’s still passionate about helping his home community, and he recognizes that blood donation does that in a major way,” said Don Campbell, director of Marsh Regional. “For a young guy who just played in the Super Bowl, this is a really selfless use of his time.”
Kilgore will be at Marsh Regional’s Kingsport office, located at 102 E. Ravine Road. The center will offer light refreshments during his visit, and free T-shirts will be provided to everyone who donates.
Before joining the 49ers in 2011, Kilgore was a 4A all-state honoree and a three-year starter for the Indians. After graduating, he starred at Appalachian State, which won two FCS national championships during his tenure. This past season, his 49ers won the NFC title to earn a trip to the Super Bowl.
Over the weekend, Kilgore was the honorary starter for the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway.
“We know how jam-packed Daniel’s schedule is with the NFL, so we really appreciate him taking the time to come out and visit us,” Campbell said. “This is a huge treat for our donors.”
Blood supplies from Marsh Regional stay local in this region, and each donation can save up to three lives. Also, donations of plasma can be used to help burn victims and premature babies heal, while platelets are frequently needed by patients with cancer, leukemia, aplastic anemia and other platelet-suppressing diseases.
To donate blood, individuals must be at least 17 years old, weigh 110 pounds or more and be in good health.
Donors also are welcome at Marsh Regional’s other collection centers: 1996 W. State St., Bristol; and 1 Professional Park Blvd., Suite 14, Johnson City.
