Gate City’s Rosa Smith hit the court running last season for the Lady Blue Devils’ tennis team.
As a freshman, she helped lead Gate City to its seventh VHSL Group A tennis state championship since 2003. In singles, she finished second in the state and along with partner Taylor Evans, also came in second in the doubles competition.
“Our team is really strong again this season,” Smith said. “I think what's strong is how close we are both on and off the court.”
Times-News Executive Editor Pat Kenney recently caught up with Rosa for a fun question-and-answer session:
Who is your favorite athlete?

What is your favorite movie?
"Pitch Perfect" or the Twilight movies.
What is your best athletic memory?
Winning state as a team.
What is your worst athletic memory?
Losing in the state singles final. That was very tough.

Megan Edwards, Sara Calton and Serena Williams.

Do you have any superstitions?
No, not really.
Do you have a nickname?
Some of my friends call Ro-Ro.
Started playing in the fifth grade. Wanted to play every day. I hit on the wall and on our garage door every day. That probably drove my parents crazy.
