Indians upend 'Blazers 4-1 at J. Fred Johnson Stadium

KINGSPORT — Wet field conditions at Daniel Boone on Tuesday gave Dobyns-Bennett’s Kyle Reeves the opportunity to begin  his senior season at J. Fred Johnson Stadium.

The home turf certainly suited him.  Reeves struck out 10 while going the distance in a 4-1 Big 8 Conference win over the Trailblazers.

The game originally was to be played at  Gray.

Reeves (1-0)  gave up a lead-off walk to rival pitcher Daniel Cox.  D-B catcher Sammy Salyers wiped  that runner off base with a pickoff throw.

The 6-foot-4 Reeves went on to pitch five no-hit innings.

“He was really good today,” said Tribe coach Ryan Wagner. “We got a big play from our catcher the first inning and after that (Reeves) kind of settled down for several innings. He was spectacular for us on the mound today.”

Even when Reeves finally started struggling, he did something spectacular.

Boone’s Zach Peters, with his team trailing 3-0,  broke up the no-hitter with a lead-off single in the sixth inning. Two strikeouts later, Reeves loaded the bags with walks to Cox and Josh Bacon.
