Teen parents receive education and support

March 8th, 2013 8:28 am by staff report

BRISTOL, Tenn. — Becoming a parent for the first time is a daunting and life-altering experience for all, but even more so for teens in the midst of their own adolescence.

Teen pregnancy is a reality. For this reason, YWCA Bristol Moms R Us program offers free classes to provide education and support to teen parents.  A new session of “Prepared Childbirth” classes will meet from 3:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesdays, from March 12 through April 23 at the YWCA’s facility at 106 State St. Each teen parent will receive a free baby item at each class session, and participants who attend all classes will receive a free convertible infant/toddler car seat.

Ongoing support and parenting classes taught in conjunction with the Bristol Family Resource Center give young moms and dads essential knowledge and skills to help them adapt to their new roles.

Moms R Us participants also receive first priority in the YWCA’s Childcare Center, the only childcare facility in Bristol to offer fees based on household income — allowing teens to continue attending school. The mission of YWCA’s

Moms R Us is to improve the health and wellness of teens and their babies by supporting healthy decisions during pregnancy and beyond.
