UPDATE: 9:40 a.m.

A collision on an entrance ramp to Interstate 26 spilled into westbound traffic Friday morning in Kingsport, collecting four vehicles and sending one man to the hospital.

It occurred shortly before 8 a.m. at Exit 6. Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Tim Wolfenbarger said a Buick sedan had slowed while attempting to enter westbound lanes, while a Ford Explorer Sport Trac that was following failed to do so. The Ford driver allegedly swerved in an attempt to avoid a collision, striking the left rear of the Buick.

The Ford then continued into the left hand lane of westbound I-26 and stalled, according to statements the driver provided police, backing up traffic. Wolfenbarger said a Chevrolet Silverado in the passing lane managed to stop and avoid hitting the Ford, but it was then struck from behind by a Chevy S-10 pickup.

When emergency personnel responded to the scene the driver of the S-10 had to be extricated from his vehicle. He was transported to an area hospital with neck pain, but his injuries are considered non-life threatening.

The driver of the Ford that triggered the crash was cited with failure to exercise due care, stemming from his initial collision with the Buick on the entrance ramp. An investigation into the incident is continuing with additional charges pending.

The incident caused a substantial backup in traffic on Westbound I-26, with motorists directed around the crash through the emergency lane. The crash scene was cleared by approximately 9:20 a.m.
