ETSU to host panel discussion on how social media has changed politics

JOHNSON CITY — “The New Media Effect: How Social Media has Changed Politics” is the focus of a panel discussion to be held at East Tennessee State University at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 27, in the D.P. Culp University Center’s Martha Street Culp Auditorium.


This free public discussion is sponsored by the College Democrats and Student Government Association of ETSU, with co-sponsorship by and partnerships with numerous additional ETSU student organizations and academic departments.


Panelists include Bob Cesca, Dr. John King, Chez Pazienza and Vanessa Valenti.


Cesca is editor of The Daily Banter and BobCesca.com, and has been a featured columnist for the Huffington Post since August 2005. With Pazienza, he co-hosts the “Bob and Chez Show” podcast, which is syndicated on WPWC-AM 1480 in Washington, D.C. Cesca has contributed to Manhattan Magazine, OP/ED News and AOL’s Walletpop, and has been featured on the BBC, CNN, MSNBC, Current TV, Sky TV and more.


King, professor and director of the public relations sequence in the ETSU College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Communication, has gained an international reputation for research, teaching and service. He has published research articles and book chapters on four continents, and his recent research has included media content analysis studies based on theories of media framing, branding and nation-branding, along with several political studies that center on the “face-ism” theory. King has been sought out for his expertise by international media, including Gulf News, a major national newspaper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and the Al Jazeera English television Network in Qatar.


Pazienza is author of “Dead Star Twilight,” founder of DXM Media, editor of the blog Deus Ex Malcontent and a regular contributor to the Huffington Post and Daily Banter. The former television producer and manager worked with Miami and Los Angeles stations, as well as MSNBC and CNN, and earned two regional-level Emmy Awards and a Golden Mic Award. He has been featured in and interviewed by the New York Times, U.S. News & World Report, Village Voice and more.


Valenti, a blogger, activist, speaker and online strategist, is currently managing editor at the award-winning blog, Feministing.com, which she co-founded with Jessica Valenti in 2004. She consults with a variety of organizations and initiatives on using the power of online media through Valenti Martin Media, a communications firm she founded with Courtney Martin.
