MACON, Ga. — Clinton Freeman had a smashing opening weekend on the baseball diamond, and more than just our area took notice.
The Atlantic Sun Conference named the East Tennessee State junior its player of the week on Monday, the same day he was named a Louisville Slugger National POW.
In the Buccaneers' 2-1 series victory against Penn State over the weekend, the David Crockett High School product batted .800 (8-for-10) — including five extra-base hits, three of them homers — scored seven runs and recorded five RBIs.
The outfielder/left-handed pitcher didn't limit his damage to the batter's box. Freeman threw one inning, striking out three Penn State batters, in Saturday's 8-3 win and closed out the series Sunday by recording the final out to earn the save in a 9-7 victory.
Freeman started all 55 games for the Bucs last season, also making 18 appearances on the mound. He led ETSU in batting average (.365), hits (81), doubles (14) and RBIs (50).
