Cleaning lady charged in second Kingsport theft; client reports $9,000 in jewelry stolen

Sarah Ann Crawford, 26, of 1822 Highland Street, Kingsport

For the second time in six weeks, a former Kingsport house cleaner has been arrested for allegedly cleaning out a client's stash of jewelry — with the latest victim reporting more than $9,000 worth as stolen.

Sarah Ann Crawford, 26, of 1822 Highland Street, was first arrested by the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office on Jan. 2. She was charged with felony theft in connection to a November police report from a home on Millington Court, which she used to clean, where approximately $5,000 in jewelry had gone missing.

SCSO detectives say they later found receipts and photos for the jewelry at a gold buying business in Kingsport, identifying Crawford as the seller and prompting her arrest.

A resident of Silver Court in Kingsport read coverage of Crawford's arrest in the Times-News, recognizing her as a woman who had been cleaning her own home. The resident then conducted an inventory of her valuables, according to a Kingsport police report, discovering several diamond rings, wedding bands and earrings were missing. A police report estimates the value of the jewelry at $9,450.

KPD Det. Terry Christian says investigation of the woman's report discovered some of the pieces had been sold to Gold Rush on Fort Henry Drive, with Crawford's ID provided to the buyers to make the transactions. A warrant was issued for felony theft, with Crawford turning herself in to Kingsport police on Thursday afternoon.

Det. Christian said Kingsport police aren't currently investigating any additional claims against Crawford, adding that the public should always hire bonded and insured companies or individuals to work in their homes.

Meanwhile, the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office says investigations into allegations against Crawford are continuing, but no additional charged have been placed.
