Hawkins residents targeted by scam

February 14th, 2013 7:03 am by staff report

ROGERSVILLE — The Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office is warning of a “Publisher’s Clearing House” scam that has targeted several Hawkins County residents recently.

The intended victims have received a call from an 867 area code number originating in Jamaica from a person who says they have won prizes from the Publishers Clearing House.

The prizes are usually several hundred thousand dollars and a luxury vehicle — most recently a Mercedes or a BMW. The caller directs the intended victim to call another “867” number and speak with an agent to obtain a green dot card, money order, or to wire money via Western Union.

The amount is usually $650 to $850 to cover the cost of shipping the vehicle.

Police say any true Publishers Clearing House prize will not cost the winner any money at all.

Anyone contacted about this scam is asked to contact their local law enforcement and the Federal Trade Commission at (877) 382-4357.
