Lady Blue Devils respond to General alarm

GATE CITY — All the Division 2 teams in the Clinch Mountain District will advance to next week’s Region D tournament, no matter what.

That didn’t prevent the Lee High girls from playing like there was no tomorrow in Wednesday’s CMD tournament semifinals.

Gate City’s Jordan Gose scored eight of her 18 total points in the fourth quarter, giving the Lady Blue Devils the cushion to withstand a convincing Lady Generals upset bid, 64-63.

“Give them credit. They played hard. They played their butts off,” said Gate City coach Kelly Houseright, whose team led 34-29 at the half and went into the final stanza tied at 47. ”They outplayed us 10-to-1 the whole entire game. We just played well enough to get by. We were very fortunate.”

Jordan Gose had 10 points at halftime but went scoreless in the third.

In the fourth she contributed two buckets, four free throws and an assist to the Lady Blue Devils’ 14-3 run that gave Gate City much-needed breathing room.

The absence of elimination didn’t diminish Jordan Gose’s sense of urgency at crunch time.

“Coach was talking about how we need to win these games because every single game we play is going to get us where we need to be,” said Jordan Gose, who had seven rebounds. “Whatever it takes, that’s what we’re going to do.”

Morgan Gose’s backcourt steal and layup with 4:32 left to play concluded the run, putting Gate City up 61-52 with 4:32 remaining in the game.

“This far into the season, we’ve got to expect people to have their best games against us,” said Morgan Gose, who led the Lady Blue Devils with 23 points, eight rebounds and four steals.

The Lady Generals met with her expectations, chipping away at the lead. MacKenzie Arney put the fear into them when she banked a 3 to make it 63-61 with 20 seconds remaining.

Two seconds later, Arney fouled Morgan Gose, picking up her fifth. Gose sank the first of her two shots, but Lee High scrapped up one final possession with a jump ball. Gate City (13-10) successfully denied another 3-point attempt but conceded the game-ending layup to Kelsey Skaggs.

“I’m very pleased with them.” said Lee High coach Mike Elkins, who got consecutive treys from Arney and Kelli Scott just before the half that kept Lee within in striking distance. “We lost a lot of games in a row and a lot of teams would’ve laid down. This team has come together at the right time.”

Chelsea Parsons scored 18 points to pace the Lady Generals (7-16). Skaggs put up 12 points and Arney hit three trifectas on her way to 11 points.

In the opener, Teonna Austin scored 17 points to lead Virginia High past Lebanon, 60-43. She also had eight boards and four steals. Savannah Jacobs had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Elizabeth Johnson scored 13 points to pace Lebanon (16-7).

The Lady Bearcats (12-12) will face Gate City in Friday night’s championship game, which will tip off at 7:30.
