Blood donors get free Girl Scout cookies

February 7th, 2013 8:04 am by staff report

Friday, Feb. 8, marks National Girl Scout Cookie Day, and to celebrate, Girl Scouts will give cookies to everyone who donates blood at a Marsh Regional Blood Center in Kingsport, Johnson City and Bristol on National Girl Scout Cookie Day.

Donors will be the first people to taste the annual treat, because cookie deliveries are still several weeks away. Girls decided to give the cookies to blood donors because they see this donation as a life-saving act of compassion every adult can make, regardless of income. Encouraging blood donations is one way to fulfill the Girl Scout mission to make the world a better place.

In addition, Girl Scouts are asking cookie fans to buy or order more boxes in honor of their success in running the largest girl-led business enterprise in the world.

Troops in the local Girl Scout Council of the Southern Appalachians earned more than $1 million for their treasuries through the 2012 Cookie Program.

Girls will take orders in person through Feb. 10 and online reservations at IWantCookies.org. The public is invited to visit the Girl Scout office at 1100 Woodland Ave., Johnson City for free cookie samples from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Girls will honor other community heroes on Friday by hosting milk and cookie parties for Johnson City’s police, firefighters, and EMS workers. Follow the fun on facebook.com/GSCSA or on Twitter @GirlScoutCSA.
