CHURCH HILL — Down to the last week of the regular season, Big 8 Conference teams are jockeying for position in next week’s District 1-AAA tournaments at Daniel Boone.
On Senior Night, the Volunteer boys and girls sent their fans home happy by sweeping visiting David Crockett.
Behind 18 points from Ben Halderman, the Falcons fought back the pesky Pioneers 65-55 on Monday to earn their first Big 8 win of the season.
Savannah Felgemacher scored 16 points and Lindsey Overbey added 12 for the Lady Falcons, who cruised to a 59-34 win over the Lady Pioneers.
In the boys’ contest, Volunteer (4-19, 1-11) bolted to an 11-0 lead just three minutes in. It was an uphill battle for Crockett (8-17, 4-10) the remainder of the game.
The Pioneers’ Tyler Page and Isaac Barkley combined for 12 second-quarter points and pulled Crockett to within two, 23-21, with 2:39 to go in the half.
Volunteer responded and went to halftime up 30-25.
Halderman scored nine points in the third quarter to help the Falcons build a 13-point advantage, 45-32, with 2:15 to go in the period.
Three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter enabled the Pioneers to keep the score respectable.
“We made some basketball plays tonight,” said Volunteer coach Christopher Brown. “We protected the ball better and that was a big key.”
Travis Brooks and Lucas Lovelace added 10 points apiece for Volunteer. Barkley finished with 16 and Page 12 for Crockett.
“Give Volunteer credit,” said Pioneers coach Richard Tarlton. “They crashed the boards and hit shots when they needed them.”
The Lady Falcons, after a slow start, pulled away for the decisive win.
“We played hard,” said Volunteer coach Jerry Myers. “But we still need to run our offense. One pass and somebody takes a shot. We have to be more patient.”
Kaylie Foster led Crockett (1-23, 0-13) with 13 points and Heather Scalf chipped in 10.
Volunteer plays at Sullivan South on Tuesday night.
