Sullivan North basketball star Chase Arnold is a guy whose legacy future Golden Raiders players will be chasing for a long time.
Arnold not only is the school’s all-time leading scorer with more than 1,800 career points, he also is North’s leading rebounder with more than 800 boards to his credit.
He was acutely aware of both looming milestones when he entered his senior season, but resolved not to allow the historic moments to become a distraction, before, during or after.
“I try not to think about it. I try to just play. It’s an honor to get the records but winning games is more important than any of that,” said the 6-foot-5 Arnold, who is blessed with guard-wing skills and also possesses the physicality to hold his own in the post.
Arnold was a standout tight end and linebacker on North’s successful football team, but basketball is the sport that he’s most likely to play at the college level.
In the meantime, he’s focused on helping the Golden Raiders win as many games as they can and advance as far as they can go in the postseason.
Times-News Sports Writer George Thwaites caught up with Arnold for a fun Q&A session. Here’s what he had to say:
Who is your favorite athlete, past or present?
Kobe Bryant. He’s the best scorer I’ve ever seen play. I never really got a chance to watch Michael Jordan. Kobe can score any time from anywhere.
What is your favorite athletic memory?
Up until now, I guess breaking the school scoring record. But we have some more time, so we’ll see what happens.
What is your worst athletic memory?
Getting beat by Elizabethton the other night. That was the worst game I’ve played in forever. I wanted to get that game out of my head, quick.
Name three ideal dinner companions.
Kobe Bryant, Peyton Manning and Michael Jordan.
What would you have for dinner?
Anything Mexican. I love Mexican food.
Do you have any pregame rituals or superstitions?
When we come back from the locker room we break it down and take off for warmups. I’ll go back out and pretty much shoot a halfcourt 3. That’s something I’ve always done.
Do you have any nicknames?
Chase. That’s about it.
Who would play you in a movie?
There is guy in “The Last Song,” Liam Hemsworth. Everybody says I look like him.
What’s your favorite movie?
It’s between “Stepbrothers” and “Coach Carter.” Will Ferrell is my favorite actor and “Coach Carter” is a real good basketball movie.
Who is your favorite superhero?
I’d have to say The Hulk. You can’t stop him. He’s just so big, you know?
What is your favorite non-sports activity?
I guess it would be videogames. I like PlayStation and NBA 2K13 is my favorite game. That’s all I play pretty much.
Have you learned anything from it?
A little bit. I try to get some moves from Kobe on that. (Laughs).
