Mount Carmel police seek man who fled traffic stop with 3,000 syringes in car

MOUNT CARMEL — Mount Carmel police are looking for a man who fled from police during an attempted traffic stop early Saturday morning while hauling more than 3,000 syringes in the trunk of his car.

Shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday, MCPD Officer Ken Lunsford Sr. was stationary on Highway 11-W at the Kaywood Avenue intersection when he reportedly observed a Honda traveling westbound on 11-W with an “extremely loud muffler and sparks emitting from under the vehicle.”

Lunsford stopped the vehicle and spoke to the driver, who allegedly identified himself as Eddie Spears, with a date of birth of Jan. 3, 1970.

A computer check revealed that identification to be false. Lunsford then asked the driver for his keys, at which time the driver started the vehicle and fled north on Hammond Avenue.

Although Lunsford lost the vehicle around the 800 block of Hammond Avenue, he had taken down the vehicle license plate number, which came back to Kenneth Austin Fields, 31, 449 Fleming Road, Kingsport.

Lunsford later looked up Fields’ photo through his Tennessee driver’s license and allegedly confirmed Fields was the driver who had fled from him.

Later Saturday, Officer Jeff Jackson responded to 822 Hammond Ave. after the resident reported a strange vehicle parked in his yard.

Jackson recognized the Honda parked there as matching the description of Lunsford’s suspect vehicle.

Upon searching the vehicle, Jackson reportedly found several cases of new syringes in the trunk of the vehicle.

The vehicle was impounded, and the more than 3,000 syringes were taken into storage by the MCPD for evidence.

MCPD Lt. Kevin Ewing said Monday the origin of the syringes had not yet been traced.

As of Monday evening, Fields remained at large. An arrest warrant has been issued for him on charges including felony evading arrest, criminal impersonation, and possession of a loud muffler.

Anyone with information about Fields’ whereabouts is asked to contact the MCPD at 357-9019.
