Sports notes from around the area, through Jan. 14:

• The Virginia State Golf Association named Tazewell’s Buck Brittain amateur golfer of the year on Saturday, Jan. 12. Brittain, a former winner of the Ridgefields Invitational, was the runner-up in last summer’s VSGA amateur championship. He registered three victories and nine top-10 finishes in points events last summer.
 
• Castlewood senior Reid Edmonds scored his 1,000th career point on Friday, Jan. 11 during the Blue Devils’ 50-45 victory over Eastside. The game was held at St. Paul, which is where Edmonds started his high school career.
 
• Science Hill’s swimming teams swept the Big 6’s meet held Thursday, Jan. 10 at Tennessee High. The Hilltoppers compiled a combined score of 772, easily outdistancing runner-up Dobyns-Bennett (557) and host Tennessee High (530).

• Kingsport Speedway announced that it will conduct a Mall Show on Saturday, Feb. 23. Drivers can call to reserve a spot at (423) 288-5992 or (276) 393-9594.
