Local angling author Keith Bartlett reports that he hasn’t really felt like putting a boat in the water during the last two weeks of the holiday season.
But that’s quite all right. Some of his favorite fishing for this time of year doesn’t require a boat.
“I went down to the Holston River last week and caught seven smallmouth in about seven hours, just walking along the shoreline,” said Bartlett.
“This time of the year, it’s nice to be able to just go down to the river and fish for a while. You can go back to the truck and warm up and have a cup of coffee, then go back out and fish for a couple more hours,” he said.
His favorite conditions for “dirt-legging” the river banks are days when the weather is bad and and water levels are high, either from heavy TVA generation or rain runoff.
