KINGSPORT — Dobyns-Bennett got into the holiday spirit on Friday night, and it turned a highly anticipated Big 8 Conference showdown in Science Hill’s favor.
All told, the Tribe committed 26 turnovers — 11 during the pivotal third quarter — and the Hilltoppers escaped the Buck Van Huss Dome with a 74-57 victory.
“We were giving out presents like Santa Claus tonight. We were just giving away candy,” D-B coach Charlie Morgan said. “And of course they scored off of our turnovers.”
After clinging to a 34-32 lead at the half, Science Hill (15-1, 4-0) was able to dictate the pace of play from the outset of the third quarter.
A flurry of steals begat a slew of easy baskets, pushing Science Hill’s lead to 45-34 in short order. Morgan called a timeout, but Science Hill continued to turn up the defensive pressure.
The frenzied pace forced D-B’s young guards to play faster than they were comfortable playing, and the Hilltoppers turned many of the ensuing miscues into points en route to a 59-45 lead at the end of the period.
“Our inexperience showed there,” Morgan said. “I thought we hung with them pretty good in the first half. Then we came out after the half and I think we had three or four straight turnovers before I could get a timeout.
“I thought that was the difference in the game.”
