Lady Falcons 'step backward;' Gaitor steps forward

CHURCH HILL — This wasn’t what Jerry Myers foresaw, not after the way his team had played over the past two weeks.

“Our bunch, we took a step backwards tonight,” the Volunteer girls basketball coach said.

Perhaps a couple.

Daniel Boone dominated the Lady Falcons from start to finish in recording an impressive 61-40 victory on Tuesday night. The defeat snapped a three-game winning streak for Volunteer, in emphatic fashion .

The Lady Falcons (8-5, 2-2 Big 8 Conference) won by an average of 21 points during the run, but could do nothing to quell the Lady Trailblazers.

Senior Jenny Snyder, who spent the first two years of her prep career at Volunteer, scored nine of her game-high 19 points in the fourth period. Allison Littleton added 13 as the Lady Trailblazers (6-5, 1-3) secured their first Big 8 win under first-year coach Travis Mains.

Lindsey Overbey collected 13 points for Volunteer. Emily Armstrong added nine.

Later, the Boone boys ensured a sweep with as complete a performance as coach Ryan Arnold has seen from his team this season.

Ryan Gaitor not only scored — to the tune of 31 points — but got everyone involved in a 77-55 rout.  Teammate Jordan Stout made a trio of treys on each side of halftime to finish with 18 points. Jacob Littleton added 15.

For Volunteer (1-8, 0-4), David McFarland closed with 16 points. Marquise Williams added 12 and Brad Halderman 11.
