INDIANAPOLIS — The founding members of the Mountain East Conference have officially applied to the NCAA to begin competing as a Division II conference in the 2013-14 academic year.
The 12 institutions, Virginia-Wise among them, submitted a formal application to the NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis on Nov. 30. The conference officially announced its intention to apply for NCAA membership in August.
In addition to Virginia-Wise, the newly formed athletic league's members are Notre Dame College and Urbana University in Ohio, and Concord University, Fairmont State University, Glenville State College, Shepherd University, the University of Charleston, West Liberty University, West Virginia State University, Wheeling Jesuit University and West Virginia Wesleyan College, all of West Virginia.
If approved, the league would meet NCAA guidelines for conference championships in 16 sports: men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's golf, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's track and field, baseball, football, softball and volleyball.
