BRISTOL, Va. — Wise Central fired on all cylinders Saturday night in the championship game of the Borderline Classic girls basketball tournament at Virginia High.
Behind 30 points from tournament MVP Hayley Wyrick, the Lady Warriors (3-0) cruised past Unaka 74-59 to capture the title.
“It’s not how you start but how you finish,” said Central coach Robin Dotson. “We played three good Tennessee teams in the tournament. This competition will help us down the road.”
Wyrick, a senior who has signed to play at Milligan, saw good things from the Lady Warriors — besides winning the tournament title.
“I’m proud of the way we came out and played hard each night,” she said. “These teams challenged us and we responded. Our team chemistry is better this year, I can see that already.”
In the third-place game, Gate City ground out an impressive 35-31 victory over Cloudland.
For the third straight game, the Lady Blue Devils (2-2) fell behind early. But down 26-20 heading into the fourth quarter, Gate City put on a defensive clinic.
Holding Cloudland (3-4) to just five fourth-quarter points and none over the final 3:16 of the game, the Lady Devils rallied for a much-needed victory.
