Attorneys in a first-degree murder by child neglect trial got underway Monday morning with a jury selected and the first witness finished by noon.
Christopher Mitchell, 29, faces felony first-degree murder and aggravated child neglect in the trial. In an unusual move, he pleaded guilty to the other two charges - tampering with evidence and identity theft - as Assistant District Attorney Dennis Brooks read the indictment to the jury.
Defense attorney Gene Scott told the panel during opening statements that his client would take his punishment for something he did, but that Mitchell is not guilty of killing his son.
