Rescuers who pulled a 64-year-old man from a burning van on Interstate 40 that had gone airborne and landed on top of another vehicle told police they smelled the odor of alcohol on him.
Charges are pending in the 5:14 p.m. Friday crash that closed the eastbound lanes of I-40 for more than an hour between the Asheville Highway and Strawberry Plains interchanges, according to Knoxville Police Department spokesman Darrell DeBusk. DeBusk said the incident began when a westbound 1986 GMC van "suddenly swerved toward the median." The van was driven by Oliver Butler, 64, of Rockwood. He was the sole occupant.
