KINGSPORT — For the first time in eight years, the Dobyns-Bennett football team will play in the TSSAA state quarterfinals.
Two stellar fourth-quarter defensive stands by the Indians led the way to a hard-fought 28-21 win over Sevier County in a Class 6A playoff showdown at J. Fred Johnson Stadium.
D-B (12-0) will travel to take on defending state champion Maryville (12-0) next Friday in the state quarters. The Rebels fought off Oak Ridge 39-25 to advance.
Leading 28-21 with 8:59 to go in the fourth quarter, D-B came up big when Sevier County had a fourth-and-goal on the Indians’ 1. Smoky Bears quarterback Luke Manning bobbled the snap from center and was swarmed by the D-B defense.
“What do they say on the radio? He was stopped by a host of Indians,” said delighted D-B coach Graham Clark. “That goal-line stand was just awesome.”
