COEBURN — Trailing 16-8 in the opening moments of the second quarter Friday night at Carl McConnell Stadium, Eastside’s football team was in danger of seeing another chance at a playoff win slip away.
Northwood’s rushing attack was rolling toward the end zone yet again, bringing the Panthers within 12 yards of a two-touchdown advantage. But a huge stop by the Spartans on fourth down stemmed the tide, setting the stage for a 90-yard TD drive that tied the game and swung the momentum in Eastside’s favor.
The Spartan defense bent many times as the game wore on, but it never broke again in a 23-16 Eastside victory.
A 5-yard touchdown run by quarterback Caleb Riner put the Spartans ahead in the third quarter and an interception by Erikk Banks in the back of the end zone with less than 10 seconds remaining in the game sealed the first postseason win in the Spartans’ short history.
