KINGSPORT — It’s a topic that has been swept under the proverbial rug since September. Not anymore.
The Golden Raiders have their rematch with Elizabethton.
A foursome of first-half touchdowns set the tone for host Sullivan North, and the Raiders swept aside West Greene 35-7 in the second round of the TSSAA Class 3A football playoffs on Friday night at Benny Compton Field.
Senior Kairi Thompson rushed 13 times for 156 yards and two touchdowns to highlight a vintage battering ram-like display from North. The Raiders finished with 398 rushing yards, 279 coming during an opening half in which North was rampant.
“I think we came out with a sense of urgency,” Raiders coach Robbie Norris said. “We hit on all cylinders, and then kind of coasted from there. I was really proud of the kids. It’s all about surviving and advancing.”
Advancing, in this instance, means earning a shot at revenge. North (11-1) can now shift its attention toward the Cyclones, who advanced to next week’s quarterfinal round via an impressive 38-0 drubbing of Gatlinburg-Pittman.
Elizabethton stunned the hosting Raiders 23-21 on Sept. 14, with Logan Birchfield’s game-winning 24-yard field goal, set up by an 80-yard kickoff return by Ethan Thomas, coming with 1:29 left in the contest.
The season prior, North traveled to Elizabethton’s Dave Rider Field and won decisively, 41-20.
