Region D volleyball: Eastside, Rye Cove open tourney play with wins

Region D, Division 1
Eastside def. Grundy
COEBURN — Grundy was no match for the champions of the Cumberland District tournament.
Eastside, fresh off its tournament crown, rolled past Grundy 25-14, 25-9, 25-8 in the opening round of the Region D, Division 2 volleyball tournament on Monday night.
Erin Stanley and Skye Jordan each recorded nine kills for the Lady Spartans. Stanley added seven service points.
Lindsay Dean collected 10 service points. Sam Cole scattered 19 assists for Eastside, which will visit  No. 2 Virginia High on Wednesday at 7 p.m. for a quarterfinal tilt.

Region D, Division 1
Rye Cove def. Hurley
CLINCHPORT — The No. 1 Lady War Eagles rolled into the regional semifinals by recording a 25-6, 25-10, 25-7 sweep Monday night.
Lucindy Lawson powered the attack for Rye Cove (16-7), finishing with 11 kills and 18 service points. Destiny Gibson and Brooke Jones added seven and six kills, respectively.
Kristin Sanders sprayed 20 assists and Breanna Wallen had nine digs for Rye Cove, which will face Haysi at Clintwood on Thursday night.

Region D, Division 1
Clintwood def. Twin Springs
CLINTWOOD — Second-seeded Clintwood  ended No. 7 Twin Springs’ season with a 25-12, 25-10, 25-3 quarterfinal victory Monday night.
Talor Stanley and Allie Robinson  led the Greenwave with nine kills apiece. The two also had three and two blocks, respectively. Katlyn Phillips recorded 22 assists and served four aces, Briana Rose added six kills, and Kelsey Conley aced Twin Springs six times off her serve.
Samantha Jordan led the Lady Titans with nine kills and three blocks while Haylee Hazlett recorded 12 assists.
The Lady ’Wave will take on Castlewood on Thursday at Clintwood.

Castlewood def. Thomas Walker
CASTLEWOOD — Emily Higgins played distributor to lethal effect, and the Lady Blue Devils advanced to the region’s round of four with a decisive 25-13, 25-10, 25-13 win Monday night.
Caitlyn Fleming finished with eight kills and Makenzie Trent added seven kills.
Samantha Williams anchored the Lady Pioneers with seven kills.
