Mount Carmel officer rear-ends vehicle on 11-W

November 4th, 2012 6:18 pm by staff report

MOUNT CARMEL — A Mount Carmel patrol car responding to a Church Hill home invasion call Saturday night rear-ended another vehicle on Highway 11-W just west of the Church Hill city line.

According to reports, shortly after 9 p.m. the westbound MCPD patrol car driven by Officer Bobby Moffitt was in the passing lane with its blue lights on when a passenger vehicle changed from the right to the left westbound lane into the patrol car’s path.

Neither Moffitt, nor the driver of the passenger vehicle, whose name was not released, were injured.

The accident is being investigated by the Surgoinsville Police Department. SPD Chief Jeff Hesoun said he will forward the findings of his investigation to the attorney general’s office for further disposition. MCPD Chief Jeff Jackson said his department is also conducting an internal investigation, and Moffitt has been placed on administrative leave.

The initial call was dispatched as a home intruder with a gun, but it was later revealed the homeowner who called 911 actually had the gun. Jackson said although Church Hill had two officers on duty Saturday night, Moffitt responded as backup because he was closer to the incident than the second CHPD officer, who was on the opposite side of town.
