WISE — Youth was served Friday at the Region D cross country championships.
Sophomores Mary Easton of Lebanon and Brad Swiney of John Battle were the swiftest runners over the course at Veldon Dotson Park.
Despite windy conditions on a muddy, wet layout, Easton blistered the competition with a course-record time of 20:03.70 to take first. Meta Grayson of Virginia High was second in 21:40.00 and Gate City’s Chloe Lane third in 21:56.70.
Swiney and teammate Benjamin Haderer ran side by side for most of the race before Swiney made a late surge and dashed across the line in a winning time of 16:56.10. Haderer (17:15.80) was second and Lebanon’s Jon Ulrich (17:48.90) third.
In the girls’ team competition, Battle finished first with 71 points. Virginia High (80) was second, trailed by Wise Central (83) and Union (94).
The Battle boys placed four runners among the top-five finishers and cruised to a 37-68 win over Union. Virginia High (81) was third and Central (88) fourth.
The top four teams in each race advanced to the VHSL Group A state meet set for Saturday, Nov. 10 at Great Meadow in The Plains, Va.
