It's autumn again and, as the trees shed their leaves, tailgating football fans andã€€holiday party-throwers alike are preparing for another season of feasting and entertaining guests.
With the economic downturn of recent years, as many local mom-and-pop establishments have been forced out of business, Kingsport Provision Company (KPC) has weathered the storm by adding a retail butcher shopã€€at its original location in downtown Kingsport - a location it has maintained since 1948. Halloween will mark the four-year anniversary of Doug Bowers' ownership of KPC. Since his arrival, the company has changed its business model to focus as much onã€€the publicã€€asã€€it does on its restaurants. KPC continues to provide top quality meatã€€and supplies to local eateries, but now the public can also take advantage of the offerings at this long-time Kingsport institution.
"The public could always buy from KPC, butã€€they had to placeã€€their order first thing in the morning orã€€they couldn't get it until the next day." With some of its restaurant clients closing over the past few years, Bowers said KPC is "rolling with the punches."
KPC uses heavy western grain fed beef containing no fillers, preservatives or hormones,ã€€resulting inã€€better-tasting, better quality meat. The United States Department of Agriculture is on site daily toã€€oversee theã€€production and packaging of the meatã€€that KPC supplies to its restaurant customers, thus ensuring quality and freshness.
KPC has a reputation for quality, and they continue that tradition. Each day, they work hard to own up to their motto, "You deserve the best, so we strive to be the best." Customers are impressed with "the quality and flavor ofã€€what they get here, compared to what they are used to getting," Bowers said.
To meet its evolving customer needs, KPC now carries products in smallerã€€portion sizes. They grind their hamburger daily out of whole muscle meat andã€€make their hamburger pattiesã€€to order in sizes of 3-, 4-, 5 1/3- or 8-ounce portions. Along with a selection of quality meat cuts, KPC offers a variety of other products including cheddar round tots, french fries, hot dogs, chili, eggs, cheeses, deli meats, country ham, boneless and bone-inã€€pork chops, chicken, and Alaska whitefish, just to name a few of the choices there.
"Anything a restaurant uses, we either have or can get for you," Bowers explained.
