Power outages reported early Tuesday from the effects of Hurricane Sandy by Old Dominion Power Co. that serves portions of Southwest Virginia, and American Electric Power serving broader areas of Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee, were primarily affecting AEP customers across the region.
AEP outages were widespread and affected thousands across its multi-state service region, including 90,000 customers in West Virginia and 21,000 in Virginia.
Before 9 a.m. Tuesday the AEP website outage map showed 1,292 Wise County customers, confined to an area around Pound, without power. Other Virginia totals included Tazewell County, 4,640; Russell County, 1,877; Washington County, 1,293; Buchanan County, 3,520; and Dickenson County, 4,701.
AEP also reported 354 customers without power in Sullivan County, Tn. and areas of West Virginia hard hit including 22,540 in Kanawha County, 8,346 in Boone County and 9,291 in Cabell County.
Back in Virginia, other outage numbers being reported by AEP include Bedford, 642; Bland, 592; Botetourt, 282; Carroll, 494; Craig, 246; Floyd, 571; Franklin, 1,156; Giles, 484; Grayson, 531; Pulaski, 561; Roanoke City, 610; Roanoke County, 1,634; and Smyth, 1,064.
ODP, a subsidiary of Kentucky Utilities that serves practically all of Wise County and portions of Lee and Scott counties, reported spotty outages in Wise County including fewer than five customers north of Wise toward Pound first reported at 1:43 a.m. and near Wise, also with fewer than five customers also reported at 1:43 a.m., according to the KU website outage map.
Those outages were still under evaluation early Tuesday. There were 29 customers without power in the Norton/Wise area, first reported at 7:21 a.m. with an expected restoration time of 9:30 a.m.
Southwest of Norton ODP reported fewer than five customers without power, first reported at 8:11 a.m. with a 10 a.m. projected restoration time. Near Big Stone Gap the utility reported fewer than five customers out with a 7:25 a.m. reporting time and 9:30 a.m. projected restoration time.comments powered by Disqus
