GRAY — One favorite won, one favorite was shocked.
The Daniel Boone boys and Science Hill girls stepped to the forefront during Thursday’s Region 1 cross country championships at Daniel Boone High School.
The Trailblazers earned the school’s first regional title since 1998 with an impressive 32-76 win over runner-up Science Hill. Dobyns-Bennett’s boys finished third with 90 points in the AAA competition.
Morristown West’s Lady Trojans came into the race undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the state. That proved to be of little consequence to the Lady Hilltoppers.
With Science Hill’s Martha McCoy and Molly Foster finishing 1-2 individually and three other Lady ’Toppers in the top 11, Science Hill stunned West 29-52 for the AAA team title.
The top three teams in each race qualified for the TSSAA state meet to be held Saturday, Nov. 3 at Percy Warner Steeplechase Park in Brentwood.
In A-AA, Sullivan East won the boys race 52-53 over Greeneville. University School finished third at 60. Greeneville (58) took the A-AA girls competition.
