Difficult route ahead for South after split on Day 1 of state volleyball tournament

MURFREESBORO — Region 1 champion Sullivan South split its matches in the opening round of the TSSAA Class AAA state volleyball tournament on Wednesday.

The Lady Rebels beat Houston 22-25, 25-20, 18-25, 25-20, 16-14 in their first match. However, In the winner’s bracket semifinals, South lost to Ravenwood 14-25, 25-12, 25-20, 25-22.

“That first match going five games took away our legs a little,” said South coach Wendy Ratliff. “It can be so unpredictable when you get to the state tournament.

South (47-8) now drops into the elimination bracket and takes on Columbia Thursday morning at 11 a.m.

In the double-elimination format, South now has a tough road ahead.

South has to win three times Thursday in order to make it to Friday’s championship match.
