KINGSPORT — Dobyns-Bennett adhered to its intentions not to look past Volunteer.
The Indians did so by getting past the Falcons as quickly as possible.
Devaun Swafford exploded for a 53-yard scoring run on the game’s first play from scrimmage and D-B went on to take a 43-0 Big 8 Conference win over Volunteer on Friday night at J. Fred Johnson Stadium.
The No. 4 Indians (9-0, 6-0) are now free to obsess as much as they want about next week’s conference showdown with No. 6 Science Hill (9-0, 6-0).
“We had our minds on this game. But next week, yeah, we’re going to be ready,” Swafford said. “Now I can think about nothing but. It’s my favorite game of the year.”
The upcoming clash of the unbeatens could easily attract more than 10,000 spectators to D-B.
Swafford finished with only three carries for 51 yards, including one for minus-5 in the second half. But he set the tone with his first carry on the sweep, during which he stunningly reversed field after breaking a tackle, instantly rendering all lines of pursuit irrelevant.
“They’ve got some tremendous athletes and all kinds of speed,” said Volunteer coach Scott Rider.
