Kingsport man charged with attempted murder in butcher knife attack on ex-wife

James Michael Johnson, 48.

A Kingsport man is charged with attempted murder after allegedly wrestling a butcher knife away from his ex-wife and attempting to slice her throat, fleeing her residence after he had inflicted, "lacerations all over her body."

James Michael Johnson, 48, of 524 Stapleton Drive, was arrested in the Wednesday night incident. Kingsport police responded to the victim's home, apartment B-2 of Model City Apartments on Stonegate Road, at approximately 10:39 p.m.

A police report states an officer arrived to find the woman, "bleeding from multiple areas." Another man present at her residence, who police have identified as the victim's friend, said he was in the apartment when she arrived with Johnson.

Johnson was reportedly "extremely intoxicated" and hit the other man in the face. That's when the woman grabbed a butcher knife from a table and told Johnson to stop.

The police report says Johnson took the knife away from his ex-wife, threatened to kill her and began, "slicing her all over." The victim claims Johnson attempted to slice her throat in the attack before she could get the knife away. Johnson is alleged to have then pulled out a pocket knife, acting as if he was going to stab the other man, before fleeing the apartment.

The police report says responding officers located the butcher knife inside a kitchen drawer and still covered in blood. The woman was transported to Holston Valley Medical Center by EMS with non-life threatening injuries, while the man at her apartment was not hurt.

After several minutes of searching for Johnson he was located during a traffic stop on nearby Peach Orchard Drive. He was charged with aggravated assault, attempted murder and booked into the city jail.
