JOHNSON CITY — The situation was dire. The outcome inexplicable.
Science Hill, trailing Dobyns- Bennett two games to one and 20-12 in the fourth game, roared back for a stunning 25-22, 19-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-13 victory in the loser’s bracket final of the District 1-AAA volleyball tournament on Wednesday.
With the win, the Lady Hilltoppers (40-11) will take on top seed Sullivan South tonight at 6 o’clock in the finals at home. Perhaps more importantly, Science Hill earned a coveted berth in next week’s Region 1 tournament.
Even winning coach Louise Stallworth was hard pressed to explain what her team had done.
“I’m astounded that the girls were able to keep their composure long enough to make a comeback,” said Stallworth. “Honest to goodness, I already had my losing speech ready.
“What you saw out there had nothing to do with me,” added Stallworth. “It was all heart, all heart.”
Science Hill had advanced to meet the Lady Indians after disposing of Sullivan Central 25-20, 25-12, 25-13.
Dobyns-Bennett tallied the first four points of the fifth game, but once again Science Hill rallied to take a 10-7 lead. The Lady Indians got within one point on a couple occasions but could not pull even.
