BIG STONE GAP — Like father, like son, and like son.
Galax senior John Bryant shot a 1-under-par 70 on Tuesday to capture individual medalist honors at the VHSL Group A golf championship held at Lonesome Pine Country Club.
It was the fourth individual state title for the Bryant family. John’s father, Doug, won the state tournament in both 1975 and ’77, and John's brother Sam earned the honor in 2005.
“I’ve been dreaming about this all my life,” John Bryant said. “It’s just an amazing feeling to win this championship.”
Bryant had a two-day total of 3-under 104 (34-70).
Only nine holes were played on Monday because of the rainy conditions, so the event was shortened to 27 holes.
Gunar Frazier of Giles was second at 111 (40-71). Amanda Hollandsworth (39-74) of Floyd and Logan Yates (38-75) of William Monroe tied for third at 113.
Yates and teammate Austin Batten, who shot 76 on Tuesday, led William Monroe to the team title. The Dragons shot a 321 in the final round to finish with a two-day total of 491.
James River was second at 495, followed by Virginia High in third (498). Wise Central finished fifth overall at 512.
