BLOUNTVILLE — A Kingsport woman is set for a July 2013 trial on homicide and assault charges in connection with a July 2011 motorcycle fatality.
Victoria E. Arapakos, 19, was charged with vehicular homicide and reckless aggravated assault in Sullivan County Circuit Court. She was arraigned and pleaded not guilty to the charges in July.
Arapakos was involved in a two-vehicle crash on New Beason Well Road on July 24, 2011, according to the Kingsport Police Department.
Manuel Mark Owens, 64, of Gate City, was killed.
A KPD incident report states the collision occurred approximately 250 feet north of Pridemore Road at about 4:35 p.m.
Police say Arapakos was southbound in a 1995 Mitsubishi Galant when she lost control of the vehicle as she entered a curve at Lenoir Road and slid into the path of Owens’ northbound Harley-Davidson.
The motorcycle came to rest on the grassy shoulder of the road. The Galant continued southbound and Arapakos was ejected, with her vehicle coming to rest on the shoulder at the Pridemore intersection.
Owens was pronounced dead a short time after the crash.
The report states Arapakos was not wearing a seat belt.
A passenger in her car, identified as Amanda Smith, then 29, of Sullivan Street, was buckled in and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Arapakos turned herself in to police at the Kingsport Justice Center after a Sullivan County grand jury indicted her on Feb. 29.
