KINGSPORT — Sullivan South opened the third game of Monday night’s District 1-AAA volleyball tournament match with an errant kill. The miss, a rare one, resulted in the Lady Rebels’ first — and only — deficit of the evening.
The Big 8 Conference champions never once showed signs of overlooking No. 8 Daniel Boone, sweeping the Lady Trailblazers 25-7, 25-3, 25-7 in the first round of the tournament.
South will meet Sullivan Central — which defeated Tennessee High 25-18, 12-25, 25-14, 25-21 — today at 5 p.m. A victory will see the Lady Rebels move into the winner’s bracket final at 8 o’clock against either No. 2 Science Hill or third-seeded Dobyns-Bennett.
Many top seeds would have attempted to coast in the opening round, particularly against a team that finished the regular season without a conference win. Not South (32-6). The Lady Rebels displayed lethal efficiency in dispatching Boone.
“I think the girls are really excited to be here. They aren’t taking anything for granted,” South coach Wendy Ratliff said. “They have been really mature throughout this season.
“As a team, they are a great group of girls,” Ratliff added. “Win or lose, they like to be here and they like to be together. They want to play as good against Daniel Boone as they do against anyone else.”
The Rebels have been playing good against pretty much everyone this season. They finished undefeated in the conference during the regular season and are, as always, seeking a return trip to the TSSAA state tournament.
